A hydraulic saw brake system having a rotatable saw blade and a hydraulic circuit for, rotating the saw blade in response to an operating switch in a specified "on" or "off" position. The system further including a hydraulic circuit having a fluid motor with an intake side and a delivery side, and a rotatable output shaft connected with the rotating saw blade. The hydraulic circuit further includes valve devices adapted to direct fluid to and from the fluid motor under predetermined flow and pressure characteristics to allow the motor and saw blade to rotate when the operating switch is in its "on" position, and for changing and controlling the flow and pressure characteristics of the hydraulic circuit in a manner dissipating energy stored in the saw blade and thereby brake the saw blade when the operating switch is moved to its "off" position.
