ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A multistage cylinder has a partial force mode. a full force extended mode. and a full force retracted mode. It comprises an outer cylinder closed at one end and open at the other, one or more intermediate cylinders located within the outer cylinder, and extendable and retractable with respect thereto, and an inner drive member within the intermediate cylinder. and extendable and retractable with respect thereto. Inner and outer annular spaces are formed between the drive member and the intermediate cylinder and between the intermediate cylinder and the outer cylinder. End closure means are provided on both the outer cylinder and the intermediate cylinder. First and second fluid passage means are provided in the drive member for supplying and discharging hydraulic fluid. one of which communicates with the inner annular space. First and second abutment means are provided on an outer surface of the drive member and on the outer surface of the intermediate cylinder for abutment with respective ones of the end closure means. a fluid by-pass being provided to permit hydraulic fluid flow within the inner annular space past the first abutment means.
