ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The hydraulic cylinder comprises at least two concentric steel tubes steel piston rings on a lower outer surface of inner ones of the tubes for making sliding contact with an inner surface of an adjacent one of the tubes: steel bearing rings on an upper inner surface of outer ones of the tubes for making sliding contact with an outer surface of an adjacent one of said tubes; a center plug fixed to an upper end of an innermost one of the tubes; a base member fixed to a lower end of an outermost one of the tubes; and a fluid port for communicating a hydraulic fluid between the jack and a source of the hydraulic fluid, in which sliding contact surfaces of the tubes, the piston rings and the bearing rings are ground to eliminate irregularities from the contact surfaces, surface hardened, and polished, whereby the sliding contact is smooth and durable. The nitrided steel on steel construction is strong and may be achieved by a nitride salt bath treatment method in which the nitrided components are slow cooled in air at a temperature intermediate ambient temperature and the salt bath treatment temperature.
