A hydraulic pump jack drive system (1) for reciprocating an oil well pump rod (6). The drive system comprises at least one hydraulic well head cylinder (2), a reversible flow hydraulic pump (7), and a master cylinder (8). The master cylinder has a free floating master piston (11) and at least one fixed bulkhead. The master cylinder also has a working fluid chamber (16) hydraulically connected to the hydraulic well head cylinder and at leat two master piston drive chambers (17, 18) hydraulicallly connected to the hydraulic pump. The hydraulic well head cylinder and the working fluid chamber are filled with a working fluid and define a working fluid system while the master piston drive chambers and the hydraulic pump are filled with hydraulic fluid and define a hydraulic drive system. Reversing the flow of the hydraulic pump causes the master piston drive chambers to be pressurized and de- pressurized on an alternating basis to reciprocally move the master piston within the master cylinder. The reciprocating master piston causes an alternating pressurizing and de-pressurizing of the working fluid chamber and the well head cylinder thereby causing the pump rod to reciprocate within the oil well.

Il comporte également une chambre (16) de fluide de travail, hydrauliquement reliée au cylindre de tête de puits, et au moins deux chambres (17, 18) d'entraînement du piston principal, hydrauliquement reliées à la pompe hydraulique. Le cylindre de tête de puits et la chambre de fluide de travail sont remplis d'un fluide de travail et définissent un système de fluide de travail, tandis que les chambres d'entraînement du piston principal et la pompe hydraulique sont remplies d'un fluide hydraulique et définissent un système d'entraînement hydraulique. Quand on inverse le flux de la pompe hydraulique, les chambres d'entraînement du piston principal sont pressurisées et dépressurisées alternativement, ce qui imprime des mouvements de va-et-vient au piston principal à l'intérieur du maître cylindre. Les mouvements de va-et-vient dudit piston provoquent alternativement une pressurisation et une dépressurisation de la chambre de fluide de travail et du cylindre de tête de puits, ce qui provoque le déplacement de la tige de pompe à l'intérieur du puits de pétrole.
