A hydraulic rotary actuating apparatus comprises a housing (1), a stepped piston (2) and a shaft (3). With the aid of two sets of teeth (5, 8) axial displacement of the piston (2) is converted to rotary motion of the shaft (3). A first radial bearing (17) is disposed near where the shaft leaves the housing. A second radial bearing (22) is formed between the shaft (3) and piston (2). The piston (2) is in turn supported at the housing (1) by way of a third radial bearing (26) and a fourth radial bearing (30). This permits rotary actuation with a minimum loss of torque and consequently at a high torque.
