A hydraulic steering system for vehicles comprises a steering unit (1) for operation of a steering motor (14). The steering motor can be supplied selectively by way of a by-pass valve (16) with compressed fluid. Each motor chamber (12, 13) is connected selectively by way of a change-over valve (10, 11) to the motor line (20, 21) of the by-pass valve (16) or to a motor line (8, 9) of the steering unit (1). The change-over valve (10, 11) is switchable in dependence on the activation of the steering unit (1). In this manner the steering motor can be adjusted more rapidly than it is by the steering unit, without the steering safety during normal steering operation being lost.
