ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Rock splitting apparatus including a retaining housing having an upper and a lower portion and having means for securing at its upper closed end including a hydraulic cylinder having a piston and a piston rod extending from and through a lower clos- ing end of the cylinder. Means is provided for removably connec- ting the extending rod end of the hydraulic piston to the closed end of the pneumatic cylinder. A retaining housing is disposed to carry the pneumatic cylinder movable in a lower portion of this housing as and when the pneumatic cylinder is advanced and retracted by the hydraulic cylinder. Cooperative guide means is formed on an exterior portion of the pneumatic cylinder housing and a lower interior portion of the retaining housing to main- tain an alignment of the cylinder in said outer retaining housing while sliding in it. A slider wedge, having opposed faces formed with tapered sliding surfaces, is removably mountable and secured to a lower end of the pneumatic cylinder and movable as the pneumatic cylinder is moved by the hydraulic cylinder. Mounting and positioning means are provided on the lower end of the outer housing. There is a pair of feathers each having an enlarged upper end retaining means formed thereon with each feather having a finished inner face adapted to mate with and present a sliding surface to the wedge when passed therebetween with the increasing taper of the wedge urging the feathers apart. A lower retainer is removably mounted on the lower end of the outer housing, securing the pair of feathers in the desired position and rela- tionship to the slider wedge. A method for splitting rock in which apparatus as above described is employed in which an outer housing is used to carry a mounted hydraulic cylinder and a pneumatic vibrating cylinder and the rock is split with this combined hydraulic and pneumatic vibrating cylinder. The method includes forming a hole of a determined diameter and depth and placing a pair of feathers and a slider wedge in the hole, moving the piston of the hydraulic cylinder by an inflow of fluid under pressure to one side of the piston in the cylinder to cause the attached slider wedge to move the feathers apart, and moving the piston in the pneumatic cylinder to produce a vibrating motion of the apparatus and to cause a small back and forward movement of the slider wedge as it is generally moved forwardly by the hydraulic cylinder to move the feathers apart in a splitting motion. The hydraulic cylinder and the wedge move in a controlled path and manner.
