ABSTRACT A hydraulic drive system operates from the periodic pressure wave produced by a Stirling engine along a first axis thereof and effects transfer of power from the Stirling engine by a power coupling flexible diaphragm (12) to a load apparatus, such as a compressor. The movable, or working member (15) of the load apparatus is reciprocatingly driven along an axis substantially at right angles to the first axis. A counterweight (30) may be freely slidable on the working member in the bore (14) of the load apparatus and is driven in the opposite direction to the working member by the incompressible fluid in a constant volume space (33) so as to damp out transverse vibrations. This arrangement of a Stirling engine and load apparatus assembly is much more compact and reduces transmission loss. The components of the load apparatus are also more readily accessible.
