ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An hydraulically driven elevator uses a biologically degradable plant oil with an oil cooler and/or a closed hydraulic circuit to prevent or at least delay the natural degradation process of the oil. In the closed hydraulic circuit, a tank for retaining the oil is sealed and the free space above an upper surface of the oil is filled with a neutral gas. A collapsible storage bag is connected to the tank to provide an additional volume of the neutral gas when the oil is drawn from the tank during upward travel of a piston an elevator car. An oil cooler circulates the oil from the tank through a heat exchanger by sensing the temperature of the oil in the tank and turning on a pump when the oil temperature is above an upper limit. 14
