A pressure regulator valve assembly has a valve assembly comprising a movable valve element for modulating flow between an inlet port and an outlet port of the valve body. The ports are connected by a passage through the valve body. The movable valve element connects with a piston rod and a hydraulically operated, pressure responsive load piston connected to the piston rod. Load pressure from the inlet port on the valve element is balanced by hydrostatic force acting upon the load piston.
