A combustor is described that includes an elongate tubular chamber having a long axis, a lower end and an upper end, the chamber having openings therethrough adjacent the upper and lower ends; an annular burner formed as a hollow tube mounted within the chamber between the lower end and the upper end, the annular burner having an inlet for passage of gas into the hollow tube and a plurality of outlets spaced apart on the burner for passage of a flow of gas out of the hollow tube and into the chamber, the outlets being positioned such that the flow of gas enters the chamber in a direction substantially towards the chamber central long axis; and an ignition device adjacent the annular burner within the chamber.
