A B S T R A C T Improved process for demetallization followed by catalytic conversion of residual hydrocarbon oils according to Canadian patent application 172040, in which the demetallization is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising 0.1-15 parts by weight of one or more metals having hydrogenation activity, except for the combination nickel-vanadium, per 100 parts by weight of silica carrier, and which shows a loss on ignition of less than 1 %w, while if the catalyst comprises vanadium the loss on ignition amounts to less than 0.5 %w.
