ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to catalysts comprising molybdenum and nickel (and/or cobalt) in combination. The spectral lines obtained in their analysis by conventional Raman spectroscopy with frequencies ranging from 900 to 1020 cm-1 have the following distribution: not more than 25% have a frequency between 900 and 930 cm-1; at least 40% have a frequency between 930 and 955 cm-1; and not more than 40% have a frequency between 955 and 1020 cm-1. These catalysts are suitable for use in the desulfurization and demetallization of hydrocarbons in the presence of hydrogen.
