HYDROCARBON PROBE AND METHOD OF INSTALLATION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A fluid detector comprises a probe (10), a probe cap (38) and an electric cable (32) connecting the probe and cap. The probe includes a casing (12) having rounded corners (50, 51) for ease of insertion into narrow confines, which casing defines a protective chamber (14) and has openings (26) permitting fluids exterior to the casing to enter the chamber. There is a fluid monitoring means (16) within the chamber having a surface adapted for exposure to the fluids. There is a compartment (20) within the casing (12) insulated from the fluids and containing a second fluid monitoring means (19). A stainless steel lead (36) is attached to the casing for inserting the probe (10) between the walls (30, 31) of a double-walled tank (34). To install the probe (10), the distal end of an electrician's fish (80) is inserted through an entry port (78) into the space between the walls (30, 31) of a double-walled tank (34) and run around the tank until it returns to the entry port. The end of the fish is engaged by a hook (82), pulled from the tank, and connected to the probe lead (36). The electric probe cable (37) has a length equal to the distance from the entry port to the desired probe position. The fish lead and probe (10) are pulled around the tank until the distal end (81) of the fish emerges from the tank. The lead is disengaged from the fish and passed through the cap (38). The slack in the lead is taken in, and the lead is attached to the cap. In an alternative embodiment there is a channel (94) within the casing (89) for receiving the distal end (81) of an electrician's fish (80). To install this embodiment, the distal end (81) of the fish may be inserted into the channel (94) in the probe casing, the probe (88) inserted into the tank and directed into position, and the fish disengaged from the probe (88) and removed from the tank.
