An oil-soluble molybdenum compound (preferably molybdenum naphthenate) is mixed with a heavy oil fraction containing asphaltenes and sulfur. Mixing is conducted at an elevated temperature (150-300°C), whereby the Mo is dispersed and preferentially becomes associated with the asphaltenes in a colloidal form. The product is then further heated to hydrocracking temperature. Hydrocracking is conducted with sufficient hydrogen flow to ensure a hydrogen flow/liquid flow ratio greater than 10, a liquid Peclet No. less than 0.5 and a gas Peclet No. greater than 3Ø At these conditions the liquid is mixed in the reactor and light ends are stripped as they are produced. It is found that asphaltene conversion is high and solid coke formation is low when the process is practiced.

Composé de molybdène soluble dans l'huile (de préférence du naphténate de molybdène) mélangé à une fraction pétrolière d'huile lourde contenant des asphaltènes et du soufre. Au cours du mélangeage, qui est effectué à une température élevée ( 150 à 300 degrés Celsius), le Mo est dispersé et s'associe de préférence avec les asphaltènes sous une forme colloïdale. Le produit est ensuite chauffé plus avant jusqu'à une température d'hydrocraquage. L'hydrocraquage est effectué avec un flux d'hydrogène suffisant pour obtenir un ratio d'hydrogène et de liquide supérieur à 10 et un nombre de Péclet pour le liquide inférieur à 0,5 et un nombre de Péclet pour le gaz supérieur à 3,0. Dans ces conditions, le liquide se mélange dans le réacteur et les fractions légères sont éliminées à mesure qu'elles sont produites. On a constaté que le procédé donne lieu à une conversion élevée des asphaltènes et à une faible formation coke solide.
