ABSTRACT A catalyst and hydrodemetallization process employing the catalyst are provided. The catalyst com- prises a small amount of a single active original hydrogenation metal selected from Group VIB or Group VIII deposed on a large-pore, high-surface area support com- prising catalytically active alumina and one or more oxides of phosphorus, said phosphorus being present in an amount within the range of about 7 wt.% to about 11 wt.%, calculated as P2O5 and based upon the weight of said support, and said catalyst having a surface area that is greater than 120 m2/gm, a pore volume that is greater than 0.7 cc/gm, and an average pore diameter that is greater than 12.5 nm (125 .ANG.).
