An antimicrobial composition in the form of a gel is effective to desinfect contact lenses. In one embodiment, the antimic- robial composition comprises: water; hydrogen peroxide in an amount effective to desinfect a contact lens contacted with the an- timicrobial composition; and a gelling component in an amount effective to maintain the antimicrobial composition as a gel.
