A hydrogen sensor having a thin-film layer superimposed on a surface of substrate of a resin, etc. and further having a catalyst layer superimposed on the surface of the thin-film layer. When this catalyst layer is brought into contact with leakage hydrogen gas, the thin-film layer is rapidly hydrogenated by the catalytic activity thereof to thereby alter the optical reflectance of the thin-film layer. This hydrogen sensor has a protective film formed either between the substrate and the thin-film layer or on the surface of the catalyst layer or both.
