ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Disclosed is a process for reducing organic compounds having CC, CO, CN or NN double bonds, which comprises reacting the organic compounds with hydrocarbons in the presence of carbon at 150-500°C. This process which is inexpensive and overcomes the disadvantages of the catalytic reduction processes, is widely applicable. For instance, alkenes can be reduced to alkanes; azo compounds, hydrazones, oximes or Schiff's bases to amines; aldehydes/ketones or derivatives thereof, such as ketals or thioketals, to hydrocarbons; and condensed aromatic hydrocarbons to dehydro compounds.
