Case 5163 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mixture of a solid carbonaceous material in particulate form, eg coal, and a hydrogenating catalyst is prepared by contacting particles of the carbonaceous material with an aqueous solution of a salt of a hydrogenating metal. The salt is then converted to a sparingly soluble derivative, eg a hydroxide or sulphide, which is precipitated onto the carbonaceous material. The water is subsequently removed. The resulting mixtures may be used to catalyse their own hydrogenation and/or the hydrogenation of other products.
