HYDROGENATION CATALYST AND MANUFACTURE THEREOF Abstract Of The Disclosure A cobalt-free hydrogenation catalyst is pro- duced by contacting a refractory metal oxide support with an aqueous impregnating solution formed from an ammoniacal solution of nickel sulfate, preferably predissolved, and an Mo+VI oxide. The impregnating solution contains nickel and sulfate ions in a ratio of substantially 1 to 1, and is used in an amount necessary for impregnating by the incipient wetness technique in a one-step impregnation. The impreg- nated catalyst support is then heated to a tempera- ture sufficient to drive off ammonia and thereby deposit nickel and molybdenum. The resulting cata- lyst is highly active for desulfurization of naph- thas, middle distillate oils and asphalt-containing oils.
