A catalyst with a high sulphur tolerance for the hydrogenation of middle distillate aromatics which comprises as a support (a) an alumina, the surface of which has been modified by contacting it with a silicon-containing compound, or (b) a silica, the surface of which has been modified by contacting it with an aluminium-containing compound. The support has been treated with air, oxygen or water vapor at an elevated temperature in order to convert the said silicon-containing compound or the said aluminium-containing compound to oxide form. The hydrogenating component of the catalyst is one or more metals of the platinum group.

Catalyseur à tolérance élevée au soufre pour l'hydrogénation de substances aromatiques présentes dans des distillats moyens, qui comporte comme support (a) une alumine, dont la surface a été modifiée par contact avec un composé contenant du silicium, ou (b) une silice dont la surface a été modifiée par contact avec un composé contenant de l'aluminium. Ledit support a été traité à l'air, à l'oxygène ou à la vapeur d'eau à une température élevée afin de convertir le composé contenant du silicium ou le composé contenant de l'aluminium pour obtenir une forme oxyde. Le constituant d'hydrogénation du catalyseur est composé d'un ou plusieurs métaux du groupe platine.
