ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A catalyst comprising nickel sulfide and tungsten sulfide supported on a titania-silica mixture oxide is used for selective hydrogenation of a heavy hydrocarbon oil containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to produce a liquid product rich in cycloparaffins. By thermally cracking the resultant liquid product, it is possible to produce light olefins and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a far higher yield than by the direct thermal cracking of the same heavy hydrocarbon oil.
