A B S T R A C T A process for hydrolyzing allyl ethers of the general formula: R6CH=CR5-CR4H-O-CR1R2R3 wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6, which may be the same or different, represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R4 represents an alkyl group of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or one of R1, R2 or R3 and R6 together represent a convalent bond, with water in the presence of a supported Group VIII metal catalyst. Methyl sec.-butenyl ether can be hydro- lyzed in high yield to methyl ethyl ketone and methanol.
