HYDROLYSIS OF OLEFIN OXIDES TO GLYCOLS ABSTRACT Hydrolysis of olefin oxides to their corresponding glycols is catalyzed by a steam stable zeolite, in its acid form, characterized by a constraint index within the range of about 1 to 12. Conversions of olefin oxide, in the presence of water, proceeded with minimal catalyst degradation. The acidity of the zeolite enables the use of milder conditions than generally applied for this hydrolysis with no loss of desired selectivity. In addition, the described procedure offers the advantages such as ease of separation and use of fixed bed reactor.
