The invention relates to a hydrolysis resistant, high molecular weight polymer represented by the formula (see fig.I) wherein R is alkylene having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms which is optionally substituted with lower alkyl; R1 and R2 are each hydrogen or methyl; wherein R7 and R8 are each alkylene having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms and are optionally substituted with alkyl; the sum of r and t is one or two; R4 and R5 are each independently lower alkyl; R6 is alkyl, aralkyl or alkaryl having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or N-alkylene lactam having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms: X- is an anion derived from the group of halogen, SO3, SO4, HSO4 and R6SO4; M is a copolymerizable vinyl monomer; n has a value of from 10 to 99 mole %; m has a value of from 1 to 90 mole %; p has a value of from 0 to 20 mole % and the sum of m + n + p is 100; q and q' have the same value which is 0 or 1; s is the reciprocal of the number of negative charges in X; and the total amount of monomer represented by subscript m can be from 1% to 100% quaternized. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of the polymer containing low residual monomer and to uses of the polymer.
