ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a hydrometallurgical process for treating nickel mattes for the purpose of producing high purity nickel, that is to say in a proportion smaller than approximately 0.05% of foreign elements, as well as for recovery of cobalt. It is known that mattes of this kind have a nickel content of about 75% by weight and that they also contain cobalt in proportions commonly comprised between 1.5 and 2%, as well as 2 to 4% of iron, for example, the remainder essentially comprising sulphur. Numerous process are known for the production of nickel from mattes and some of these processes make use of hydrometallurgy. The specification discloses a hydro- metallurgical process for refining nickel matte, which comprises the following consecutive steps: (a) treating the matte in a divided state with chlorine in an aqueous medium, in the presence of a mixture of ferrous and ferric chlorides; (b) at least partially eliminating the iron contained in the solution obtained in step (a), this elimination being performed by contacting the solution with an organic liquid-liquid exchange phase; (c) eluting the organic liquid-liquid exchange phase by contacting the exchange phase with a first aqueous regeneration phase; (d) eliminating metals other than the residual nickel from the solution resulting from step (b); and (e) electrolysing the nickeliferous solution from step (d) to deposit pure nickel at the cathode. The matte in its divided state may have a particle size in the range of 100 to 2000 microns.
