HYDROMETALLURGICAL PURIFICATION PROCESS ABSTRACT An improved purification process is disclosed for use in conjunction with the hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from copper sulfide ores and concentrates, the improved process comprising removing substantially all of the cuprous chloride and cupric chloride from the solution to be purified by reacting these values with chalcopyrite at a temperature of at least about 110°C. in order to produce solid copper sulfides and a ferrous chloride solution containing various metal impurities. The process is primarily intended to be employed with copper recovery processes comprising leaching the copper feed material with ferric chloride in order to produce a solution comprising cuprous chloride, cupric chloride and ferrous chloride, as well as the various metal impurities, recovering a portion of the copper values by reducing the cuprous and/or cupric chlorides to elemental copper, and treating the remainder of the solution to remove the residual copper and various impurities and to treat the ferrous chloride.
