A lateral flow in-vitro diagnostic device is disclosed which comprises a housing, means in the housing to introduce a sample to be assayed in the device, means in the housing for fluid collection, and a backing strip having spaced apart first and second ends. The backing strip has a surface with hydrophilic properties. The surface comprises either a hydrophilic heat-sealable adhesive or a hydrophilic pressure sensitive adhesive. The adhesive increases the surface energy of a fluid flow path in the device and decreases the surface tension of a biological fluid flowing along the fluid flow path.
