The present invention provides a process for obtaining a non-toxic coating suitable for preventing attachment of fouling organisms on marine structures which involves applying onto a substrate a coating composition and curing the coating composition to yield a water-insoluble hydrophilic coating wherein the coating composition includes at least one cellulose ester and at least one organic solvent which possesses a sufficiently slow evaporation rate in order to yield a coating which is substantially smooth and non-porous. The invention also pertains to the reaction of the cellulose esters in the coating compositions with crosslinkers to provide improved toughness for coatings on substrates that are submerged in water. The invention also relates to the application of the coating composition to a substrate to be subjected to a marine environment. In a further aspect, the coating composition is applied as a clearcoat to a previously coated substrate.
La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant d'obtenir un revêtement non toxique pour empêcher la fixation d'organismes salissants sur des structures marines comprenant l'application sur un substrat d'une composition de revêtement et le traitement de la composition de revêtement pour obtenir un revêtement hydrophile et hydrosoluble, ladite composition de revêtement comportant au moins un ester cellulosique et au moins un solvant organique qui présente un taux d'évaporation suffisamment lent pour produire un revêtement qui est sensiblement lisse et non poreux. L'invention concerne également la réaction d'esters cellulosiques dans les compositions de revêtement avec des agents de réticulation pour produire une ténacité améliorée pour des revêtements qui sont submergés dans l'eau. L'invention concerne en outre l'application de la composition de revêtement à un substrat destiné à être exposé à un milieu marin. Selon un autre aspect, la composition de revêtement est appliquée sous la forme d'un revêtement transparent à un substrat précédemment revêtu.
