23233-267 ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a hydrophilic, highly swellable hydrogel based on (co)polymerised hydrophilic monomers or based on graft (co)polymers, which gel has been surface- modified by means of a mixture of one or more diglycidyl phosphon- ates of the formula Image in which R is alkyl, alkenyl or aryl, and one or more other reactive compounds which are capable of reacting with the func- tional groups in the polymer. The hydrogels according to the invention have an improved mechanical stability and water- retention capacity of the swollen particles. They are highly suitable as absorbents for water and aqueous solutions and can be used in particular for the production of hygiene articles, such as nappies, sanitary towels, tampons and similar products.
