23233-269 ABSTRACT The present invention relates to hydrophilic, swell- able graft polymers which comprise, in a random distribution, from 0.5 to 50% by weight of radicals of the general formula I Image (I) and radicals of the general formula II Image (II) from 49 to 99% by weight of radicals of the general formula III Image (III) containing an acid group, and from 0.1 to 2% by weight of radicals of a crosslinking agent which are derived from monomers containing at least two olefinically unsaturated double bonds, where R1 is hydrogen or methyl, R2 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R3 is a carboxyl, sulphonyl or phosphonyl group, R4 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or a carboxyl group, X is, for example, (C1-C22)-alkyl, Y is, for example, -COCH3, and n and m, independently of one another are integers from 2 to 300. The polymers according to the invention are useful as absorbents for water and aqueous solutions. 23233-269 They are characterized by a high absorption rate and form hydro- gel particles of high gel strength which are non-tacky in the swollen state and do not tend to stick to hot steel surfaces.
