ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for breaking an oil-in-water emulsion which comprises the addition of a hydrophobic polyelectrolyte copolymer comprising a diallyldimethylammonium chloride and a hydrophobic monomer selected from the group consisting of quaternized dialkylaminoalkylacrylates, quaternized dialkylaminoalkylmethacrylates, and alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acids, preferably ethylhexylacrylate, to the emulsion.
