The object of the present invention is to prevent an excessive pressure in an oil passage, which is a high pressure side in a speed reducing operation, in a hydrostatic continuously variable transmission. In a hydrostatic continuously variable transmission having a hydraulic closed circuit comprising a hydraulic pump P, a hydraulic motor M, a high pressure oil passage 53 which is disposed between the hydraulic pump P and the hydraulic motor M and sends hydraulic oil to the hydraulic motor M side from the hydraulic pump P side, and a low pressure oil passage 52 which is disposed between the hydraulic pump P and the hydraulic motor M and sends hydraulic oil to the hydraulic pump P side from the hydraulic motor M side, there is provided a pressure regulating valve 130 for engine brakes which introduces the hydraulic pressure in the low pressure oil passage 52 into the high pressure oil passage 53 when the hydraulic pressure in the low pressure oil passage 52 becomes not less than a predetermined value when a vehicle engine applies brakes.
