A coater head (22) has a housing (23) which defines a coating pond (28) supplied with coating under pressure. A plurality of bars (21) extend within the coating pond (28) in the cross-machine direction, and are spaced parallel to one another in the machine direction. A paper web (36) is engaged against a backing roll (24), and travels through the coating pond (28) past a metering blade (30) which applies coating from the pond to the web. The bars (21) induce a turbulent flow which shears bubbles of air entrained in the coating pond, thereby reducing the bubble diameters and air-induced imperfections in the coating. Greater machine speed, which tends to entrain more air, induces greater shear at the bars which causes bubble size to be more greatly reduced.

L'invention se rapporte à une tête de coucheuse (22) dotée d'un compartiment (23) qui définit un bassin de couchage (28) alimenté en couchage sous pression. Une pluralité de barres (21) s'étendent dans le bassin de couchage (28) dans le sens travers. Une bande de papier (36) est engagée sur un contre-rouleau (24) et traverse le bassin de couchage (28) en passant devant une lame de dosage (30) qui applique la substance de couchage depuis le bassin sur la bande. Les barres (21) induisent un écoulement turbulent qui cisaille les bulles d'air entraînées dans le bassin de couchage, ce qui a pour effet de réduire le diamètre des bulles et de diminuer les imperfections du couchage qui sont dues à l'air. Toute accélération de la machine tend à entraîner une plus grande quantité d'air et, de ce fait, à accroître le cisaillement au niveau des barres, ce qui permet de réduire encore plus largement la taille des bulles.
