A process is described for hydrotreating a heavy hydrocarbon oil containing a substantial portion of material which boils above 524°C to form lower boiling materials, which comprises adding to the heavy hydrocarbon oil a predominantly paraffinic, hydrogen-rich solvent having a critical temperature of less than 500°C to thereby form a diluted feedstock mixture and subjecting said feedstock mixture to hydrotreating in the presence of activated carbon catalyst at a temperature and pressure substantially at or greater than the critical temperature and pressure of the solvent.

Description d'un procédé d'hydrotraitement d'une fraction d'hydrocarbures lourds renfermant une quantité importante de composés dont le point d'ébullition dépasse 524 degrés C, pour obtenir des composés à point d'ébullition plus bas. Le procédé consiste à ajouter à la fraction d'hydrocarbures lourds un solvant principalement paraffinique, riche en hydrogène, possédant une température critique inférieure à 500 degrés C, de façon à obtenir un mélange dilué; puis, à soumettre ce mélange dilué à un hydrotraitement en présence d'un catalyseur au charbon activé, à une température et à une pression à peu près égales ou supérieures à la température critique et à la pression du solvant.
