ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to compounds of the general formula Image (I) wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from carboxylic acid groups and alkyl of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or R1 and R2 together with the carbon atoms on which they are substituent form a sugar pyranose or furanose ring, and R1 and R2 when alkyl are each substituted by at least one OR group, where R is H or alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, with the proviso, that when R is always alkyl in both R1 and R2, R is alkyl of 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and X is a protective group. Processes for the preparation of such compounds are also disclosed. The compounds of this invention have antimicrobial activity and have been found to possess activity against certain strains of cancerous cells.
