ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Racemic and chiral (2R,4R)-4-c-hydroxy-2-r-(substituted) chroman (and thiochroman)-4-acetic acids of the formual: Image (wherein. Z is O, S, SO or SO2; R1 is alkyl, CF3 or (SH2)nAR [where n is 0-2, AR is optionally substituted phenyl] and R1 is H, methyl or ethyl, or R1 and R2 together (CH2)m [where m is 4 or 5], R3 is H or methyl, provided that R2 and R3 are each H when either Z is other than -O- or R1 is other than methyl, ethyl or CF3; X is H, F, Cl, Br, emthyl, NO2, CN, CH2SO2 or benzoyl; X1 is H, F, Cl, Br, CO2H, alkyl, alkoxy or benzyloxy; X2 is H, F, Cl, Br or alkyl, or X1 and X2 are together 7,8-benzo) and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, their use in the treatment of diabetic complications and intermediates therefor.
