29,463 HYDROXYALKYLCARBAMATE-CONTAINING SELF-CROSS-LINKING POLYMERS ABSTRACT A self-cross-linkable polymer contains at least two hydroxyalkyl carbamate groups per molecule and may comprise the reaction product of a polymer, such as an epoxy or an acrylic resin, and at least one hydroxyalkyl carbamate- containing primary or secondary amine. Alternatively, the self-cross-linkable polymer may be obtained by polymer- ization of an ethylenically unsaturated, polymerizable mon- omer containing at least one hydroxyalkyl carbamate group. The amine is joined to the monomer or to the backbone resin by reaction of primary or secondary amine groups thereof with suitable reactive functional groups of the resin. method of making the polymer, which is heat curable to provide a thermoset film or coating, comprises reacting the monomer or the backbone polymer with an amine containing hydroxyalkyl carbamate groups or precursors thereof com- prising hydrolzable blocked primary amine groups. When present, the blocked groups are unblocked and reacted with a cyclic carbonate to form the hydroxyalkyl carbamate.
