T 3201 A B S T R A C T HYDROXYL FUNCTIONAL DERIVATIVES OF EPOXIDIZED DIENE BLOCK COPOLYMERS AND PROCESS FOR MAKING THEM A process for making polymers of conjugated dienes containing hydroxyl groups in the diene blocks, which process comprises (a) making a precursor polymer by polymerizing at least one conjugated diene which leaves 1,2 disubstituted, 1,1 disubstituted, 1,1,2 trisubstituted or tetrasubstituted olefinic unsaturation in the polymer, (b) epoxidizing said precursor polymer such that epoxy groups form at said substituted sites and the amount of epoxy functionality in the polymer is from 0.1 to 5 meq/g polymer, and (c) contacting the epoxidized polymer with an alcohol having one unprotected hydroxyl group and either a compound of general formula MXn, wherein M is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, boron, aluminium, iron and tin; X is a halogen; and n is an integer corresponding with the valence of M, or an organic complex thereof. A conjugated diene block copolymer containing 0.1 to 15 meq/g polymer of hydroxyl groups, which polymer is comprised of alcohol groups of the formula Image Image or (I) (II) wherein P is -OH, -Cl or -OR with R being selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals containing up to 10 carbon atoms, monohydric and dihydrio alcohol groups and carbonate groups; Q is -OH or Cl with the proviso that at least one of P and Q is -OH and R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals with the proviso that if P is -OR only one of R1 and R2 can be hydrogen.
