Patent Application for Hyenol Pits (Hyenol-acronym from hydrostatic entrapment of leachates) revised 09 Jan 90 ABSTRACT The central and novel disclosure of this invention is a simple hydraulic arrangement in suitable hydrologic, limnologic, or oceanic circumstances for permanent or temporary and environmentally-safe disposal, confinement, or storage in a HyenolPit of wastes and garbage or of other materials, solid or liquid. The Pit is built by a circum-closing Dike, making a Cell in fresh or salt waters--swamp, river, pond, lake, estuary, sea, or ocean, or in an upland area, or artificially constructed parts thereof. The leachates from the material or the material itself, if liquid, are confined to the Cell by the differential pressure created by pumping down the liquid inside it so that the surface level of liquid inside is lower than the surface level outside of the waters surrounding the Cell. Hence the hydrostatic pressures inside at every level are always less than the corresponding pressures in the waters outside the Cell. If the Dike and bottom sediments are not impervious to percolation, flow can occur through the Dike or the bottom sediments of the Cellonly into the Cell under the impulsion of the pressure gradient resulting, and so no leachates or exudates can move from the Cell into the ground water or surface waters except through the offices of the treatment plant into which the Pump conveys the drawndown emissions.
