HEMISPHERICAL RADIATION SYSTEM ABSTRACT A system adapted for coupling to an optical conduit provides an input or output port for the transmission of radiant energy to or from the conduit over a spherical angle greater than a hemisphere. The system includes a base support element for holding an end portion of the conduit, typically an optical fiber, and includes a cavity which surrounds the end portion of the conduit. The cavity is provided with an internal reflecting surface. An end of the cavity is closed off with a dome-shaped transparent scattering body having a cylindrical wall, wherein the end of the dome terminates in a surface of revolution such as a hemisphere or prolate ellipsoid.
