The present invention provides hyperpolarizable organic chromophores. The chromophores are nonlinear optically active compounds that include a .pi.- donor conjugated to a .pi.-acceptor through a .pi.-electron conjugated bridge. Macromolecular structures including the hyperpolarizable organic chromophores are also provided.
