HYPOGLYCEMIC THIAZOLIDINE DIONES ABSTRACT Hypoglycemic 2,3-dihydro-5-benzo[b]furanyl-2,3-dihydro- 5-benzo[b]thienyl-, 3,4-dihydro(2H)-6-benzo-pyranyl- and 6- thiochromanyl-thiazolidine-2,4-diones of the formula, Image (I) (where n is 0, 1 or 2;) X is O,S, SO, SO2, CH2, CO, CHOH or NR5 [where R5 is H, lower alkanoyl, benzyloxycarbonyl, or CO (CH2) x (6H5 where x is 1-3, optionally substituted lower alkyl]; R is H, CH3 or C2H5; R1 is H, cycloalkyl, pyridyl, thienyl, furyl, naphthyl, biphenyl, tetrahydrofuranyl, tetrahydrothienyl, tetrahydropyranyl, C6H4W2 or alk-W1 [where alk is alkylene, ethylidene or isopropylidene, W1 is H, OH, alkoxy, thioalkyl, pyridyl, furyl, thienyl, tetrahydrofuryl, tetrahydrothienyl, naphthyl, cycloalkyl, or C6H4 W2, and W2 is H, OH, F, Cl, Br, alkyl, alkoxy or thloalkyl] R2 is H or CH3; R3 is H, alkyl, C6H4W2 or benzyl; and R4 is H; or R1 and R2 together form alkylene and R3 and R are H; R1 and R2 are H and R3 and R4 together form alkylene; or R1 and R4 are H and R2 and R3 form alkylene) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are useful in treatment of hyperglycemic animals.
