ICE ANCHOR ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An ice anchor useful for towing icebergs and ice fragments is formed in the preferred embodiment of a T-shaped frame comprised of a transverse member or beam and a shank attached to it. Hot water is passed through narrow tubes around at least the bottom and sides of beam, causing the ice around it to melt. The entire anchor sinks beam first into the ice. Torque is then applied to the shank, causing the beam to melt its way in a transverse path around the axis of the shank, after which the hot water is shut off, stopping the melting. Towing tension can be applied to the top of the shank, and the resulting pressure is transmitted via the beam to unmelted ice directly above the beam, which is stressed in compression, the strongest failure mode of ice. Collection and recycling of the water reuses the unexpended heat energy, resulting in high efficiency.
