Several constraints limit the usefulness and longevity of a standard ice fishing rod. Due to the fact that most ice fishing is done in small huts, the rod must be made smaller than a standard fishing rod, thus reducing its tensile strength and leading to potential breakage. In addition, apparatus used on a standard ice fishing to indicate the presence of a fish on the line are small round plastic floatation devices that tend to freeze in the cold water, merging with ice and making the fishing experience difficult, if not impossible. This short ice fishing rod incorporates an elastic-flexible sensor-type element to act as an active bobber, able to detect and project fishing line tension and movement signaling the presence of a biting or caught fish. Under the forceful tension of the caught fish, the sensor will deflect until it touches the main mast of the rod, dispersing the load through both elements, and allowing the overall strength of the rod to be far greater than conventional ice fishing rods.
