A method for preventing overheating of a portion of a rotor heated by a heating element in an ice management system during operation of the heating element, the ice management system having at least a first switch and a second switch for controlling an electrical current flow to the heating element. The method includes switching the first switch on while the second switch remains off, then measuring the current flow. If the current is determined to be flowing, operation of the heating element is disabled. Then, the second switch is switched on to provide current flow to the heating element. The first switch is then switched off, while the second switch remains on, and the current flow is measured again. If the current is determined to be flowing, the operation of the heating element is disabled. These steps are repeated for each time the heating element is operated.
