"ICE PROTECTED RUDDER" ABSTRACT A major restraint attending the navigation of ships in ice arises from the vulnerability to ice damage of appendages vital to navigation such as propeller(s) and rudder(s). This invention protects such vital appendages from unrestrained contact with ice and limits the size of such ice pieces as may contact them to proportions which can be comminuted by the propeller and will not submit the appendages to catastrophic damage such as might hazard the ship.
