The present invention relates to a method of characterising a nucleic acid region and, more particularly, to a method of analysing a marker nucleic acid region. The method of the present invention is based on identification of one or both of the nucleic acid regions flanking a marker nucleic acid region and provides a means of analysing a marker nucleic acid region which is characteristic of a clonal population of cells. The method of the present invention is useful in the context of enabling a range of applications including, but not limited to, monitoring the progression of a condition characterised by the presence of a clonal populations of cells (such as a neoplastic condition), monitoring the levels of one or more clonal cell population, predicting the likelihood of a subject's relapse from a remissive state to a disease state, for assessing the effectiveness of existing therapeutic drugs and/or new therapeutic agents and identifying the presence of a marker region.

La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant de caractériser une région d'acide nucléique et concerne plus spécifiquement un procédé permettant d'analyser une région d'acide nucléique marqueur. Le procédé de cette invention repose sur l'identification d'une ou des deux régions d'acide nucléique qui flanquent une région d'acide nucléique marqueur et fournit un moyen d'analyse d'une région d'acide nucléique marqueur qui est caractéristique d'une population clonale de cellules. Le procédé de la présente invention permet de mettre en oeuvre une gamme d'applications consistant notamment à surveiller l'évolution d'un état qui se caractérise par la présence d'une population clonale de cellules (tel qu'un état néoplasique), à surveiller les niveaux d'une ou plusieurs populations de cellules clonales, à prévoir la probabilité de rechute d'un patient d'un état de rémission à un état de maladie, à évaluer l'efficacité de médicaments thérapeutiques existants et/ou de nouveaux agents thérapeutiques et à identifier la présence d'une région de marqueur.
