The invention relates to a method for identifying feline or canine proBNP or fragments thereof, which comprises the following steps: providing a feline or canine sample, contacting the sample with at least one antibody which binds, when feline proBNP or fragments thereof are identified, to at least one epitope in the area comprising amino acids 20 to 42 and/or in the area comprising amino acids 57 to 80 of the feline proBNP, and which binds, when canine proBNP or fragments thereof are identified, to at least one epitope in the area comprising amino acids 20 to 68 of the canine proBNP, and identifying the presence and/or concentration of the feline or canine proBNP or fragments thereof in the sample.
